Referring Students to the TLC
The TLC offers academic support services to all students and believes that all students can benefit from feedback and academic community. Faculty can encourage all students to use the TLC in the following ways:
- Include the most recent TLC Service Statement on all of your syllabi
- Arrange a TLC class visit
- Tell students a personal story about the value of seeking and receiving feedback from colleagues
We also welcome faculty referrals of students to the TLC. The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) offers free academic support for students at all levels. We offer one-on-one consultations and group workshops in writing, math, statistics, science, business, and study skills. We also work with students at all stages of their writing and on questions about English grammar and vocabulary, reading, and learning strategies. Our schedules for appointments and drop-in visits are posted on our website at www.tacoma.uw.edu/tlc. For special needs or subject tutoring requests, please email uwtteach@uw.edu or call (253) 692-4417.

Faculty Development
The Writing Fellows Institute
In collaboration with Writing Studies faculty, the writing center offers the weeklong Writing Fellows Institute the second week of September. Writing Fellows includes research from writing studies and the scholarship of teaching and learning to help faculty identify bottlenecks in student learning, design effective assignments and assess them equitably and efficiently, and support writing habits of mind with in-class activities. Faculty may also receive support in fulfilling the UWT W-course guidelines and identifying curricular opportunities to expand writing experiences for students. The Writing Fellows Institute offers a stipend to faculty who complete all the workshops and faculty from across disciplines are invited to apply in spring quarter. Contact the writing center director for more information.
Passport Series
As part of the Office of Digital Learning's Passport Series, the writing center offers workshops on effective writing instruction. Faculty can earn badges and build their teaching profiles. Learn more and view the schedule at the Office of Digital Learning.
