Giving to Student Affairs at UW Tacoma creates a lifetime of impact for our students and generations of change in our community.
With a lifelong, life-wide approach to supporting the socioeconomic mobility, academic, and personal success of students, Student Affairs complements faculty excellence through programs and services outside of the classroom.
Under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor Mentha Hynes-Wilson, Student Affairs has launched a collaborative, campus-wide student success initiative that promotes a holistic, student-centered experience, meeting the needs of UW Tacoma’s diverse student population. Her approach is rooted in equity, transparency, and deep engagement with students, ensuring that every voice is valued and every student feels seen and supported.
Mentha Hynes-Wilson has long held the conviction that access is not just a component of education; it is one of its pillars. She is deeply committed to opening doors of opportunity for individuals who may never have imagined themselves in higher education, or who might otherwise have been excluded from clear and supported pathways to success. For her, equity means more than entry; it means meaningful investment in each student’s journey, beginning with their admissions packet, continuing through their first steps on campus, to the proud moment they walk across the graduation stage, and well beyond.
Earlier in her career, Mentha put into practice many of the principles of change management, navigating resistance, strengthening communication, providing training, and guiding institutions through the smooth transition of systems, structures, and policies. Guided by a steadfast belief in transformational change and institutional accountability, she now channels that experience into shaping the next generation of educational leaders, empowering them to carry forward the work of creating more just, responsive, and student-centered institutions through a legacy of equity, innovation, and student-centered excellence.
Student Affairs expands access to a university education, cultivates students’ sense of belonging, provides programs that enrich the student experience and facilitate student success, and fosters career readiness for all students.
Whether you give to our Student Affairs Success Fund or one of our many other focused funds, such as the First Generation Student Initiative Fund, the Veteran and Military Resource Center (VMRC) Fund, or the UW Tacoma Pantry Fund, your support makes an immediate difference in the lives and futures of our students.

As a student in my first quarter here at UWT, I've felt very welcomed and supported in pursuing my personal and professional goals. Mentha Hynes-Wilson (Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs) is one of the most impactful people who have encouraged me to continue to be involved. She has a strong connection with students and is always interested in meeting. I appreciate her transparency in decisions and providing realistic insights.

I am incredibly grateful to the University of Washington Tacoma Student Affairs staff for their support throughout my time on campus as a formerly incarcerated student. Their encouragement has been crucial in helping me overcome my insecurities and fears, empowering me to step forward, seek support, and get more involved on campus. Their guidance has played an essential role in my growth and experience as a student.

I would argue that my real college experience started once I began working for Student Affairs. The number of networks I have made around the entire campus, the opportunities I have experienced, the professional skills that I have developed. Working for this office has helped ready me for the professional world after undergrad. Not to mention the kind and generous people of Student Affairs that have helped me along the way. The things that I have experienced and gained from Student Affairs have truly been advantageous to me as a First Gen student.

Student Affairs helped me navigate through the challenges and barriers with my admissions process. The Office of First Gen supported me and helped me not give up on my dream of becoming a UWT student despite the obstacles that I had faced during my transfer process.

UW Tacoma Pantry Fund
The Pantry gives all students access to healthy food and basic need items. It works to provide culturally relevant food items to foster a sense of belonging.
Without Access to PAWS or the Pantry, I think I would've become a college dropout. I wouldn't have been able to afford going to college and continuing to receive mental health help. And I can't count the number of the number of times that I wouldn't have eaten because I needed to remain on campus but couldn't afford to buy a meal. Because of the Pantry, it didn't come to that.

I would like to share with you how I was helped by the Office of Student Advocacy & Support at UW Tacoma when I was struggling with my housing issues. I'm deeply grateful for what the office did in paying my rent that was due when I did not have funds to do so! They saved me from being evicted!
