The University of Washington is part of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program administered by the U.S. Department of State. The program aims to:
International Scholars Operations (ISO) at UW Seattle campus leads the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program efforts. UW Tacoma's Office of Global Affairs (OGA)/International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) works as a liaison between ISO, academic units, and other relevant parties to provide central support for UW Tacoma’s visiting scholars and their dependents.
Whether you are interested in hosting a J-1 scholar or becoming a J-1 scholar at UW Tacoma, please begin by contacting OGA/ISSS!
Getting Started
UW can sponsor J-1 Exchange Visitors who are offered UW academic appointment titles listed here. Students pursuing degrees at foreign universities are ineligible for academic appointments.
ISO issues Form DS-2019: Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status, which is necessary to apply for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa.

Cultural Exchange Requirement
All host units must have plans in place to offer cross-cultural exchange opportunities to J-1 exchange visitors and their J-2 dependents.
