 2024-2025 JACQUE DACAMARA ENDOWED STUDENT SUPPORT FUND FOR SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE STUDENTS

As a result of generous donations from Associate Professor Emerita, Janice Laakso, and her husband, John Laakso, the University of Washington Tacoma School of Social Work and Criminal Justice has this opportunity to offer financial support for participation in policy-focused activities to students enrolled in BASW and MSW programs. Jacque DaCamara was a cousin and close friend of the donors and shared with them a passion for politics, the political process, and making a difference through advocacy.  Awards typically range between $500 to $1000, depending on the number of applications received and competitiveness of the applicant pool. 

Application procedures are described below.  Eligible applicants are students continuing their degree progression in winter quarter 2025, when the scholarship funds will be awarded. Successful applicant(s) will be encouraged to write a “thank you” to the donor. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Currently enrolled University of Washington Tacoma BASW or MSW student in good standing.

  • Continuous enrollment from Fall quarter 2024 through Winter quarter 2025. 

  • Must not have been a prior recipient of this award.

 

Application Procedure:

To apply for this financial support, applicants must provide the following information to the School of Social Work & Criminal Justice through this webform.

  • Completed application form (this webform).

  • An unofficial UW Tacoma transcript (downloaded from MyUW).

  • A personal statement addressing your interest in and goals related to social welfare policy and advocacy. Discuss all activities in which you participate that are related to advocacy and social policy. The length of the essay should be 1-2 pages, typed, double-spaced, with 11 or 12 point font.   

    • Examples include: lobbying, organizing protests/demonstrations to advocate for policy change or new laws, participation in policy changes and/or advocacy projects, writing op-ed pieces, community involvement, community organizing, etc. 

    • Be specific about the knowledge or skills you hope to add or gain from your education at UW Tacoma to enhance and inform your approach to social policy and advocacy work.

I hereby give permission to release my financial aid data to the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice so that the scholarship award committee may consider my financial need as a dimension of the scholarship criteria. If I receive a scholarship from UW Tacoma, I: 1) give the University permission to publish my name in news releases, the web and advertisements promoting its scholarships; 2) agree to write funders a thank you note; and 3) may be required to attend a scholarship stewardship event, if held.
