Preinterns receive individual caseload supervision from psychologists and doctoral interns jointly. As an APPIC-member internship site, CAPS is committed to offering interns the opportunity to provide supervision. At the same time, we strive to ensure that preinternship guidelines are followed (Per WA state law i.e., doctoral psychology interns may not, by themselves, supervise preinterns) and that all trainees receive high quality supervision. Thus, we utilize a co-supervision model whereby a psychologist and intern provide supervision to each preintern for 1.5 hours weekly. Following our graded and sequential model of training, the psychologist takes the lead in supervising the preintern during autumn quarter while the intern primarily observes. Then, in winter quarter, the intern takes the lead in supervising, while the psychologist continues to provide input, answer questions, and otherwise co-supervise. In spring quarter, the psychologist continues supervising the same preintern, while the doctoral interns switch. This provides preinterns with the experience of working with a new supervisor (the doctoral intern) who may provide new perspectives, while maintaining the same overall structure, expectations, and shared knowledge of the preintern’s caseload. Doctoral interns providing supervision meet for 1 hour weekly with the psychologist for supervision-of-supervision.
