Principles & Objectives
Let's think for a moment about ways in which we engage with our surroundings when traveling to new places. We tend to pay attention to how to behave within a new space, we may be emotionally impacted by new adventures, and we engage at a cognitive level to learn as much as we can on our journey. At times we may feel like we are out of our element, and we don't fit in. Every classroom, be it in-person, hybrid or online, is a new experience and space for our students. Faculty play a critical role is establishing a culture that nurtures engagement by thoughtfully addressing connection, consistency, content, community, and compassion within their learning spaces.
Under the principle of engagement, the instructor establishes and maintains a clear presence in the course and creates opportunities for dialogue and sharing between learners.
Some of the objectives that are explored in faculty development opportunities within this passport stamp are:
- Objective: The instructor establishes and models communication norms for an inclusive, welcoming learning environment.
- Objective: The course includes multiple avenues for learner-instructor interaction.
- Objective: The course includes multiple opportunities for learner-learner interaction.
- Objective: The instructor is a visible, engaged presence throughout the course.
- Objective: The instructor creates course content using a variety of formats to promote learner engagement.
