Biomedical Sciences Research
UW Tacoma's Biomedical Sciences faculty are involved in a wide variety of research projects with underlying focus on the betterment of human health. Students can gain research experience in the areas of epidemiology, biochemistry, cellular biology, and neuroscience.
Environmental Social Sciences Research
Understanding environmental challenges and enhancing environmental sustainability require information about people. We conduct social sciences research related to governance, public participation, environmental policy, watershed management, and ecosystem restoration planning.
Instrumentation & Equipment
View some of the instrumentation and equipment within SAM that are utilized by SAM faculty, students, and outside partners. If you are interested in using any of the SAM equipment, please visit our Environmental Analytical Research Laboratory (EARL).
Ecology & Conservation Biology Research
Ecology and Conservation Biology is an important area of research that our faculty are involved in. We are fortunate to have a broad range of research expertise in our division ranging from marine conservation biology, fungi and plant interactions, insect behavior and urban ecology.
Geosciences Research
Geosciences is the areas of study involving our planet earth and its many different geologic systems. The geoscience faculty are involved in studies examining parameters controlling occurence of harmful algal blooms in the Pacific Northwest, quantifying distribution of microplastics in the environment as well as utilization of magnetic properties of minerals to identify contaminant sources and evidence of past climate change.
Center for Urban Waters
The Center for Urban Waters brings together environmental scientists, analysts, engineers and policymakers who are developing creative and sustainable solutions to restore and protect the Puget Sound.
Environmental Chemistry Research
Several of the SAM faculty pursue research in the areas of environmental chemistry as it relates to contaminant and chemical fate, transport and sources to the environment. Most of the expertise is in investigating aquatic systems primarily those impacted by urban systems and anthropogenic factors.
Mathematics Research
Pure and applied mathematics are areas of research that the SAM faculty are pursuing. Students can get involved in research with faculty with expertise in statistics, math education, combinatorics, discrete mathematics, and theoretical computer science.
