What is Project Management? More specifically, what is a project?
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. It is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and, therefore, has a defined scope and resources. Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. Even professionals without the title "project manager" find these skills and tools useful.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is the world’s leading professional organization to standardize and codify this knowledge through PMI’s "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge" (PMBOK® Guide), as well as certifications such as the CAPM and PMP exams.

Frequently Asked Questions
For Project Management and Foundations of Project Management, we recommend students have at least one year of project experience responsible for the planning, scheduling, controlling, resourcing, and motivating of a team of people engaged in accomplishing a set of predefined goals.
No application is required for these courses. If you are interested in becoming certified through the Project Management Institute (PMI), you will need to follow their application procedures.
Upon successful completion of Project Management or Foundations of Project Management, each student will be able to plan, schedule, and control a project including the acquisition of staff and their motivation. The skills acquired are not restricted to just the project management role but in other aspects of professional and personal life. These skills include creating and maintaining a budget, recognizing and mitigating risk, monitoring and assessing progress in achieving a goal, developing and communicating a strategy and making professional, public presentations.
Our courses are designed to teach the practical application of project management. Course hours are applicable towards the required educational hours to take PMI exams. The PMBOK houses the content from which the Project Management Institute (PMI) draws the questions for the test. Course hours are applicable towards the 35 hours of project management education required to take the PMP.
However, Project Management and Foundations of Project Management are not PMP test preparation courses. About 25% of our students take a separate exam prep course prior to sitting for the PMP exam. You will receive a Certificate of Completion with successful completion of either course.
Programs specific to test preparation will teach you the material specific to the test, however, they may not teach you the benefits of engaging in certain management practices described in the PMBOK. Project Management and Foundations of Project Management address what to do, why and when you should do it, and what the pros/cons, risks/benefits of using a particular method are. You will have access to the tools that help you become an effective Project Manager. Multiple methods are discussed, as well as how and when to select the appropriate ones in practical application.
Project Management has been updated to include information from PMBOK® 7 and The Standard for Project Management.
The content and topics covered in Foundations of Project Management are taken from the Project Management Body of Knowledge, version 6 (PMBOK® 6) and other supplemental readings consistent with the CAPM®.
During this class, you will learn criteria on when to use what and, in the handout notes, reference material on details as well as citations to books and papers that detail the methods even further. You will work with a team to develop a project using the project management skills you are learning and present your project in the last session.
