Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) Small Research Grants – mid-March / mid-October

ADAI Small Grants award are intended to support new and established UW researchers pursuing drug and alcohol abuse research in developing preliminary findings to increase competitiveness for future external funding. Up to $30,000 is available over a 1-2 year period.  Deadlines each year are typically mid-March and mid-October.  More details available here.

CoMotion-Amazon Catalyst Award - late May

Amazon Catalyst awards support all current students, faculty, and staff in pursuing big, bold solutions to a problem in the world, Proposals are selected in any field, including the humanities, engineering, the sciences, and the arts, within a defined set of themes. The 2019 themes are urban transportation and computational social science. Awards of up to $10,000 are provided. More details available here

EarthLab Innovation Grants – late January

EarthLab seeks to engage a broad group of UW researchers and diverse community partners in interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and creative activities related to our most pressing environmental challenges. Proposals for awards of $5,000 to $50,000 are open to groups representing at least two different units. More details here.

Global Innovation Fund – November 1st

This program provides funding to support initiatives and programs that enhance the UW’s global engagement and reach. Awards of up to $20,000 are provided, although most are much smaller. At least 25% of total program costs must be matched by departments. More details available here.

Innovation Awards – deadline unknown

The Innovation Awards are intended to foster a University-wide innovation mindset and stimulate innovation among faculty from a range of disciplines, whether in fundamental, discovery-based work or in translational approaches. Typical awards range from $100,000 to $500,000 over two years. More details here.

Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS):

Early Investigator Catalyst Awards – Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.  Close dates are:  January 1 / April 1 / July 1 / October 1

These small awards are designed to provide ‘just-in-time’ resources to investigators looking to complete a project or collect pilot data for a larger grant application. Up to $5,000 in direct costs (no salary support allowed) is available to UW faculty over a 6-month performance period to support work that would otherwise not be able to advance. Academic/Community Partnership Research Awards – LOI deadline is mid July 

This award encourages the development and support of collaborations between academic and community investigators. Up to $20,000 (over 1-year) is available to UW faculty who are engaged in work that enhances or implements sustainable health programs in community settings. Special consideration is given to teams that acquire matching funds. More details available here.

Population Health Initiative Pilot Research Grants – deadlines vary by grant type

This program provides funding to support new interdisciplinary collaborations that seek to create a world where all people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Awards are up to $200,000.  More details available here.

Provost’s Bridge Funding Program – November 1 / May 1

This program provides support to UW faculty in order to temporarily fill funding gaps for critical research programs. It is not intended to initiate new research projects. A maximum of $50,000 may be requested, with a requirement for total funds to be matched 1:1 by the applicant’s college/school. More details available here

Royalty Research Fund (RRF) – last Monday of Sept / first Monday of March

The RRF program awards grants of up to $40,000 to UW faculty across the tri-campus system in order to launch new research pave the way for future external funding. This program offers one of the best opportunities for jump-starting a promising research project. More details available here.

Simpson Center for the Humanities:

Collaboration Studio Grants – deadline unknown

This grant provides focused, quarter-long opportunities for cross-disciplinary/cross-departmental groups of two to four faculty members to work together to catalyze, deepen, or reconfigure research projects with near- or long-term goals of publication/dissemination, in traditional or diverse formats. Awards are made in the form of one course release per faculty member and/or summer stipend (up to $7,000). More details available here.

Colloquia and Conferences Grants –early-November / Spring

These grants support cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary symposia, colloquia, and conferences of various scales (e.g. working conferences, international research conferences, etc.). Topics should be of interest to scholars across two or more disciplines. Typical awards range from $6,000 to $15,000. More details available here.

Cross-disciplinary Research Clusters – early-November / Spring

These awards are intended to seed new scholarly activity and develop further pathways for collaboration by bringing together UW faculty and graduate students from different departments and disciplines who share research interests. Projects in this category may vary widely in form and scale. Awards are up to $20,000. More details available here.

Digital Humanities Summer Fellowships – early-November

This fellowship support scholars pursuing research projects that use digital technologies in innovative and intensive ways and/or explore the historical, social, aesthetic, and cross-cultural implications of digital cultures. Joint applications for a collaborative research project are encouraged. Each awardee will receive $10,000 in summer salary (plus benefits). Large-Scale Collaborations – early-November

These awards enable faculty and graduate students to pursue extended cross-disciplinary and cross-departmental collaborative projects in research, teaching, and/or public engagement. Large-scale collaborations may include research inquiries that are linked to cross-departmental curriculum development, for instance, and/or a complementary series of public lectures. Activities may be designed to develop new programs of study at the University of Washington, or to prepare the foundations for major grant applications to national foundations. Typical awards range from $7,500 to $20,000. More details available here.

Second and Third Book Fellowships – mid-November / mid-February

In order to assist University of Washington faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences in making progress toward their promotion to full professor, and in recognition of the particular contributions of scholars who have obtained this distinction and are advancing scholarship in their fields by writing their third books, the Simpson Center will pilot support for Second and Third Books together during the summer of 2023. Summer salary support of $10,000. For Undergraduate Research:

Levinson Emerging Scholar Award – early August

The Levinson Emerging Scholars Program supports talented and highly motivated UW juniors and seniors who want to pursue creative and advanced bioscience and related research. Awards are not to exceed $8,000 and cover support costs, including (but not limited to): educational expenses; books, supplies, or materials; and travel and conference fees. Mary Gates Undergraduate Research Scholarship – early February

This scholarship is intended to enhance the educational experiences of undergraduate students at the University of Washington while they are engaged in research guided by faculty. Students receive research scholarships to pursue research in a variety of disciplines. Awards are in the amount of $5,000 distributed over two quarters. More details available here.

Undergraduate Research Program Conference Travel Awards – rolling

These awards provide partial support to undergraduate students in order to present work at a professional (domestic only) conference. Airfare and conference registration fees may be covered in their entirety; other expenses may be partially covered. More details available here.

 

Washington Research Foundation Fellowships – early August

This fellowship supports promising advanced undergraduates who work on creative and sophisticated science and engineering research projects under the guidance of UW faculty. It targets students who have already participated in undergraduate research for at least three quarters and who are working beyond an introductory level in a project that requires creativity and advanced knowledge. Awards are in the amount of $7,500, distributed evenly across the fall, winter, and spring quarters. More details available here.
