Dr. Sunny Cheng Selected as the Recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Community Engagement Award
Congratulations to Dr. Sunny Cheng, Associate Professor at the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership at UW Tacoma, for being selected as a recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Community Engagement Award by The Office of Community Partnerships at UW Tacoma. Dr. Ali Modares, Assistant Chancellor for Community Partnerships expressed, "This award recognizes Dr. Cheng's approach to community engagement through collaborative community-based participatory research and intervention mapping procedures. Dr. Cheng's work highlights deep and sustained mission-aligned work with her community partners to improve the well-being of students' and community health."

SNHCL's Inaugural Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership's Networking Event Held on April 22nd
The School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL) held its first networking event for Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership students and alums on April 22nd at William Philip Hall. This event was well-attended. SNHCL invited a small number of alums and community partners including Multicare and Tacoma Pierce County Health Department for this inaugural event but hope to make it an annual event with more community partners and employers next year. Many thanks go out to our alums and community partners as well as this event's organizer, Johnica Hopkins - SNHCL's Academic Advisor.

Dr. Sharon Laing and Dr. Kathleen Shannon-Dorcy Awarded Tier 2 Pilot Grant by the University of Washington Population Health Initiative
Congratulations to Dr. Sharon Laing, Associate Professor at SNHCL and Dr. Kathleen Shannon-Dorcy, Nurse Scientist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center who were awarded Tier 2 Pilot Grant by the University of Washington Population Health Initiative. The initiative’s Tier 2 pilot grant program is intended to support UW researchers in developing preliminary data or the proof-of-concept needed to pursue follow-on funding to scale one’s efforts. BSN Students in Dr. Jingyi Li's TNURS 414 Class Will Hold a Fundraising Art Show for the Opening Minds through Art Program
UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership's Bachelor of Science in Nursing students from Dr. Jingyi Li's TNURS 414 class volunteered at the Opening Minds through Art (OMA) Program last quarter. Now they will be organizing a fundraising art show for the OMA program at the Mountainview Community Center on May 8th from 12pm to 2pm. Dr. Robin Evans-Agnew Presented at Sigma Theta Tau's Annual Global Conference on Nursing Responsibility for Planetary Health
Dr. Robin Evans-Agnew, Associate Professor at UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL), presented a talk on "Global Health to Planetary Health: Research and Revolution in Nursing for Climate Justice" at Sigma Theta Tau's Annual Global Conference and chapter meeting at Seattle Pacific University on April 13th. His presentation was based on his recent publication on Nursing Responsibility for Planetary Health: Evans-Agnew, R. A., LeClair J., & Sheppard D.-A. (2024). Just-Relations and Responsibility for Planetary Health: The Global Nurse Agenda for Climate Justice. Nursing Inquiry. 31(1) p.1-16 and included an update on Climate Justice and Nursing in the Environmental Health and Nursing Textbook published by ANHE.
Dr. Anne Mulligan, SNHCL Clinical Faculty and President of Psi-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, welcomed the members including alums from SNHCL's Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Nursing programs to the Annual Global Conference.

Congratulations to Dr. Susan Johnson on Her Retirement at the End of Spring 2024 Quarter!
Dr. Susan Johnson, Associate Professor at the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL) at UW Tacoma became an Associate Professor at SNHCL in 2013. Her research focused on workplace bullying. She has given presentations both nationally and internationally on this topic. In addition to being respected for her expertise in workplace bullying, Dr. Johnson is regarded highly as a professor among her students and colleagues at SNHCL and will be missed! Kiara Landon, BSN Alum of UW Tacoma, is Official Delegate of WA State to Miss Universe Philippines
Kiara Landon, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Alum from UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, was named runner-up in the Miss Philippines USA 2023 competition in July 2023. She will now represent the US and Washington's Filipino community at the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 contest in Manila in May. Learn more here.

Dr. Jingyi Li's Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at UW Tacoma Volunteered at the Opening Minds Art Program
Dr. Jingyi Li is an Assistant Professor at UW Tacoma’s School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL). Her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in their practicum class volunteered at the Opening Minds through Art program at Mountainview Community Center in Edgewood this quarter. Dr. Li invited Wendy Morris, the Regional Coordinator for Dementia Friends in Pierce County to give a Dementia Friends Champion training for SNHCL’s BSN students since the training content was relevant to their practicum project. This cohort of students presented their “promoting dementia-friendly communities through art and education” project at the poster session last week. Learn more about Dementia Friends here.

JingJing Xu (MSN, RN), a Short-Term Visiting Scholar from Nanjing Medical University visiting UW Tacoma
JingJing Xu (MSN, RN) is the Vice-Director of Nursing at the First Affiliated Hospital, Women and Children Branch, of Nanjing Medical University as well as Associate Teaching Professor in the School of Nursing at Nanjing Medical University in Jiangsu, China.
Dr. Vanessa de Veritich Woodside, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion and Associate Professor of Spanish Language and Cultures at UW Tacoma has shared that "Jingjing Xu's primary areas of expertise and research interests include chronic disease education and support with a focus on maternal and child health. Her team’s research concentrates on topics such as children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers, lipohypertrophy care, and gestational diabetes. Ms. Xu would like to express her gratitude to Dr. Weichao Yuwen for sponsoring her visit to UW Tacoma. During her stay, she'll delve into advanced teaching concepts, observe innovative teaching methods, and actively participate in the research activities in Dr. Yuwen’s research group and her collaboration with Dr. Martine De Cock in SET. She is particularly eager to gain insights into courses related to health informatics, familiarize herself with research applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to health research, and develop future collaborations. In addition, Ms. Xu appreciates the invaluable support provided by Dr. David Reyes, Dr. Jingyi Li, Dr. Robin Evans-Agnew (SNHCL), Dr. Martine De Cock (SET), Jessica Immerman, and Akane Yamaguchi. Susan Ramos, SNHCL MN Alum - Providing Mental Health First Aid Educational Series
Susan Ramos, UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership's (SNHCL) Master of Nursing Alum is currently the Director of Utilization Management at Wellfound Behavioral Health Hospital and Co-Founder of Commencement Behavioral Health (CBH) Coalition for School Mental Health. She has been doing monthly school mental health educational series to all the school nurses and health aides at the Tacoma Public Schools. These one hour sessions started in September 2023 and are scheduled until May 2024. The school nurses have the opportunity to receive CE credits for these sessions. The topics include Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for teens and school staff in the Tacoma School District, anxiety disorders, youth psychosis, depression/suicide, youth treatment programs such as partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), and inpatient hospitalization, as well as youth therapy programs. These sessions have been well-received with a huge turnout for each session thus far. School nurses have expressed the need for more education, tools, and resources with youth mental health.

Dr. Katie Haerling Invited to Present Research at the NCSBN Scientific Symposium
Dr. Katie Haerling, Professor at the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership at UW Tacoma, has been invited to present her research at the NCSBN 2024 Scientific Symposium. Contributing to evidence-based regulatory decisions: A comparison of traditional clinical experience, mannequin-based simulation, and screen-based virtual simulation. Dr. Weichao Yuwen (SNHCL) and Drs. Martine De Cock and Ling-Hong Hung (SET) Receive NIH Funding to Start a Machine Learning for Health Equity Lab at UWT
Drs. Martine De Cock and Ling-Hong Hung (SET) and Dr. Weichao Yuwen (SNHCL) received funding from the National Institutes of Health AIM-AHEAD PAIR program to start a Machine Learning for Health Equity lab at UWT. The Machine Learning for Health Equity lab at the University of Washington Tacoma stems from a collaborative effort between the School of Engineering and Technology and the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. As the MPIs shared: "this interdisciplinary partnership is at the core of our mission. We believe that innovative applications of machine learning hold immense potential in addressing a wide range of challenges related to disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and self- and family management of chronic health conditions. However, it is essential to acknowledge the genuine risks associated with machine learning systems in this context, particularly regarding algorithmic bias based on gender and race. Our primary goal is to pioneer responsible machine learning solutions. We aspire to ensure that these solutions offer the same high-quality service to all patients and families while safeguarding their privacy and addressing issues of fairness and equity."

Congratulations to Dr. Sunny Cheng for her Many Recognitions
- UW Tacoma’s School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership is delighted to announce that Dr. Sunny Cheng has been promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure effective September 16, 2023.
- Dr. Sunny Cheng was selected by the Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) as the recipient of the Shining Star Community Partner Award which recognized her community engagement and research activities to support TPS students, families, and schools. This line of work was supported by the community partnership office and the Population Health Initiative. The ceremony will be held on September 28th.

Bao Nguyen Accepted to Duke-NUS Medical School MD/PhD program in Integrated Biology and Medicine
Congratulations to Bao Nguyen, BA Healthcare Leadership Alumna! She has been accepted to the Duke-NUS Medical School MD/PhD program in Integrated Biology and Medicine! This program is her top choice. It is a seven-year program that takes place in Singapore and will provide a full scholarship for her education. She hopes to pursue public health research and apply what she has learned from the BA Healthcare Leadership program as well as her research work with Associate Professor, Dr. Sharon Laing.

Dr. David Reyes Named New Dean of UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership
We are excited to announce that Dr. David Reyes has been named the new Dean of UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Dr. Reyes served as interim dean since Dr. Sharon Fought, founding dean of the school, stepped down in 2022, and his appointment is the culmination of a national search. He also holds a faculty appointment as an associate professor in the school, and an adjunct appointment in both the Schools of Nursing and Public Health at UW in Seattle.
Dr. Reyes has nearly 40 years of professional nursing and leadership experience. He received his Doctor of Nursing Practice, ’13, and Master of Nursing, ’02, and Master of Public Health, ’02, degrees from UW in Seattle, and his B.S. Nursing, ’83, from Seattle University.
His primary scholarship interests are in addressing the root causes of health inequity and disparities, building community leadership capacity, and using community-based participatory approaches that focus on equitable partnerships between communities and health systems. He is currently partnering with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to explore barriers to, and facilitators of, vaccine acceptance among Asian American Pacific Islander and transgender communities.

Highlighting Dr. Susan Johnson's Latest Work
We are excited to share that Dr. Susan Johnson, Associate Professor at the UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, completed a book last fall which is published as an open access text under a creative commons license via UW's Manifold publishing platform: Building and Sustaining a Compassionate Nursing Practice.
Dr. Johnson was recently interviewed by CBS Chicago and appears in their story involving workplace bullying at a local courthouse. The recorded video can be seen on cbschicago.com.
Dr. Johnson also recently led a workshop on workplace bullying in health careers in the STOP the Bull(ying) in Higher Education Symposium for Faculty held on February 24th and March 31st, 2023.

Dori Unterseher Named as the New Chief Nursing Officer for Harbor Regional Health
Congratulations to Dori Unterseher, Master of Nursing alumna at the UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership! She was promoted to the role of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Harbor Regional Health in January 2022. Dori Unterseher has been with Harbor Regional Health since 1992 in diverse roles such as Manager of the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Department, Emergency Department Director, and Director of Education.

Bao Nguyen Accepted to Duke-NUS Medical School MD/PhD program in Integrated Biology and Medicine
Congratulations to Bao Nguyen, BA Healthcare Leadership Alumna! She has been accepted to the Duke-NUS Medical School MD/PhD program in Integrated Biology and Medicine! This program is her top choice. It is a seven-year program that takes place in Singapore and will provide a full scholarship for her education. She hopes to pursue public health research and apply what she has learned from the BA Healthcare Leadership program as well as her research work with Associate Professor, Dr. Sharon Laing.

Dr. David Reyes Named New Dean of UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership
We are excited to announce that Dr. David Reyes has been named the new Dean of UW Tacoma's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Dr. Reyes served as interim dean since Dr. Sharon Fought, founding dean of the school, stepped down in 2022, and his appointment is the culmination of a national search. He also holds a faculty appointment as an associate professor in the school, and an adjunct appointment in both the Schools of Nursing and Public Health at UW in Seattle.
Dr. Reyes has nearly 40 years of professional nursing and leadership experience. He received his Doctor of Nursing Practice, ’13, and Master of Nursing, ’02, and Master of Public Health, ’02, degrees from UW in Seattle, and his B.S. Nursing, ’83, from Seattle University.
His primary scholarship interests are in addressing the root causes of health inequity and disparities, building community leadership capacity, and using community-based participatory approaches that focus on equitable partnerships between communities and health systems. He is currently partnering with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to explore barriers to, and facilitators of, vaccine acceptance among Asian American Pacific Islander and transgender communities.

Highlighting Dr. Susan Johnson's Latest Work
We are excited to share that Dr. Susan Johnson, Associate Professor at the UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, completed a book last fall which is published as an open access text under a creative commons license via UW's Manifold publishing platform: Building and Sustaining a Compassionate Nursing Practice.
Dr. Johnson was recently interviewed by CBS Chicago and appears in their story involving workplace bullying at a local courthouse. The recorded video can be seen on cbschicago.com.
Dr. Johnson also recently led a workshop on workplace bullying in health careers in the STOP the Bull(ying) in Higher Education Symposium for Faculty held on February 24th and March 31st, 2023.

Dori Unterseher Named as the New Chief Nursing Officer for Harbor Regional Health
Congratulations to Dori Unterseher, Master of Nursing alumna at the UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership! She was promoted to the role of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Harbor Regional Health in January 2022. Dori Unterseher has been with Harbor Regional Health since 1992 in diverse roles such as Manager of the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Department, Emergency Department Director, and Director of Education.

Dr. Sunny Cheng and the Commencement Behavioral Health (CBH) Coalition Invited to Speak at Stadium High School
On January 13, 2023, Dr. Chieh (Sunny) Cheng, Assistant Professor at the UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, and the Commencement Behavioral Health (CBH) Coalition, which was founded by our Master of Nursing alumna, Susan Ramos RN, MN, and Dr. Lucas McIntyre, were invited by Stadium High School to deliver talks and activities around youth mental health topics such as substance misconceptions. The message CBH delivered to the students was " We are excited to be here with you all! We believe that you, as a generation with greater access to science and information, are also living at a time where caring for your mental health and the mental health of others is much less stigmatized. Judy Jaanriksmais Soeum, BA HCL Alumna, Member of the NCQAC Team
Judy Jaanriksmais Soeum, BA HCL Alumna, did precepting with the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission (NCQAC) during her senior year and got hired there after graduation to be part of the Student Nurse Preceptor Grant Program. Judy shared, "Our goals are to help reduce the shortage of healthcare settings for students by increasing the number of preceptors available for students which then in turn brings more nurses into the workforce with an increase in graduations for LPN, RN, and ARNP programs. Since working in this position, I’ve learned much about the importance of nursing and the operational side to the nursing world in government— this includes policy, rules, procedures, and research."
