2023 Huskies On The Hill Recap
ASUWT lobbied for bills that would benefit all students at UWT, with the main focus being Senate Bill 5703, which would expand access to the Washington State College Grant eligibility, providing crucial financial support to students in need.
Husky's on the Hill is an annual event that brings together student representatives from all three University of Washington campuses to lobby for bills that would benefit all students. This year, ASUWT met with multiple lawmakers in the state's capitol to advocate for bills that would benefit students at UWT.
The highlight of ASUWT's advocacy efforts was its lobbying for Senate Bill 5703, which proposes to expand access to the Washington State College Grant eligibility and make the Bridge Grants permanent. If passed, students at UWT whose income is at or below 70% of the median family income would receive the full award. Additionally, the bill would make the Bridge Grants permanent, providing much-needed financial support to UWT students.
Many UWT students struggle to pay for their education due to financial barriers, and we believe that Senate Bill 5703 is a crucial step towards reducing these barriers. By ensuring that students with the most financial need receive the full award and making the Bridge Grants permanent, this bill would help ensure that every UWT student has the opportunity to pursue their academic goals without financial constraints.
During our lobbying efforts, we met with multiple lawmakers in the state's capitol to advocate for this bill. We shared our personal stories and the stories of our fellow students, highlighting the financial challenges that many UWT students face. We emphasized the urgent need for increased financial support to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
We are proud of our advocacy efforts during Husky's on the Hill, and we believe that our efforts will make a real difference for students at UWT. As student leaders, it is our responsibility to advocate for policies that benefit all students, and we will continue to do so to ensure that every UWT student has access to the resources they need to succeed.
