ASUWT is recruiting students for four task forces - any currently enrolled student is welcome to apply! These task forces are intended to provide ASUWT and campus leadership with information and suggestions for improvements on particular areas that ASUWT had determined need more detailed attention. Task forces all work to support the ASUWT Mission Statement:
"Everything we do will create a meaningful, attainable and welcoming experience for our students. In this time of intense transition we will thoughtfully design a sense of safety and belonging on our campus."
General duties for all task force members:
- Represent the UW Tacoma student perspective and provide relevant insight and guidance on their particular task force topic
- Serve as a resource for ASUWT as it relates to your task force
- Be an active advocate for improving the sense of belonging and student experience
- Understand the University's key issues and be able to articulate why support for your task force topic is essential
- Attend a minimum of 7 task force meetings (1-2 hours each)
- Provide the ASUWT President and Directors with recommendations towards improvement of your task force topic
- Provide feedback on the commitments made from University leaders, once they have reviewed the recommendations put forth by the task force
- Create and provide oversight on the implementation plans
- Attend 1 ASUWT Board meeting per month (held Fridays from 2-3pm) to report on progress of the taskforce
- Stay in regular contact with the task force ASUWT liaison
- Commit an average of 4 hours per week to your task force work
Students may only serve on one task force, and will be compensated with a stipend of $1,000.00 for their participation. Please read more specific details on each task force below.
This task force is designed to research solutions for retaining and recruiting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students within STEM majors. With a strong emphasis on Black and Latinx students. Recommendations from this taskforce will be used to create strategic plans to increase the graduation rate of the BIPOC student population.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Represent the UW Student perspective and provide relevant insight and guidance on recruitment and retention of BIPOC individuals in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
- Serve as a resource for ASUWT as it relates to BIPOC retention.
- Be an active advocate for improving the sense of belonging on our campus. Understand the University’s key issues and be able to articulate why support for restructuring of recruitment and retention models for BIPOC individuals.
- Attend a minimum of 7 task force meetings (1-2 hours each).
- Provide the ASUWT President and Directors with recommendations on how to improve BIPOC recruitment and retention in STEM.
- Coordinate with the School of Engineering and Technology, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Academic Advising and other relevant offices as necessary.
- Provide feedback on the commitments made from University leaders, once they have reviewed the recommendations put forth by the committee.
- Create and provide oversight on the implementation plans.
- Attend 1 ASUWT Board meeting per month to report on progress of the taskforce.
- Stay in regular contact with the ASUWT Director of Outreach.
TERM OF TASK FORCE AND TIME COMMITMENT
- Serve a term of January-June 2022
- An average of 4 hours per week
- Be flexible to allow for occasional evening or weekend commitments for meetings, events or programs
This taskforce is designed to address the issue of housing equity and the need for affordable and attainable housing for our students. This taskforce will provide recommendations to University and College administration, and shepherd an implementation plan to address housing inequities and housing supply on our campuses.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Represent the UW Student perspective and provide relevant insight and guidance on topics and issues including homelessness, housing equity and campus housing options.
- Serve as a resource for ASUWT as it develops and enhances its Housing Equity Plan.
- Be an active advocate for housing equity on the UWT campuses. Understand the University’s key issues and be able to articulate why support for increased University housing is critical and give educated and informed responses to people who need better understanding about this key issue.
- Attend a minimum of 7 task force meetings (1-2 hours each).
- Provide the ASUWT President and Directors with recommendations on how to address the issues of housing supply, and housing inequity on the UWT and TCC campuses.
- Coordinate with Student Advocacy and Support, Campus Safety & Security, Psychological and Wellness Services, and other relevant offices as necessary.
- Provide feedback on the commitments made from University leaders, once they have reviewed the recommendations put forth by the committee.
- Create and provide oversight on the implementation plans.
- Attend 1 ASUWT Board meeting per month to report on progress of the taskforce.
- Stay in regular contact with the ASUWT Director of University Affairs.

This task force is designed to help the University of Washington Tacoma reimagine our public safety infrastructure and recommend strategic investments to create a sense of safety and belonging for all students. This work will seek ways to expand our views of public safety to include campus security, public health and mental health and how these areas can work together to promote a safe and equitable environment for all.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Represent the UW Student perspective and provide relevant insight and guidance on on campus public safety structure.
- Serve as a resource for ASUWT as it relates to reimagining public safety.
- Be an active advocate for improving the sense of belonging on our campus. Understand the University’s key issues and be able to articulate why support for restructuring of public safety is critical to the growth and development of this institution.
- Attend a minimum of 7 task force meetings (1-2 hours each).
- Provide the ASUWT President and Directors with recommendations on how to improve our public safety infrastructure.
- Coordinate with the Office of Campus Safety & Security, Psychological and Wellness Services, and other relevant offices as necessary.
- Provide feedback on the commitments made from University leaders, once they have reviewed the recommendations put forth by the committee.
- Create and provide oversight on the implementation plans.
- Attend 1 ASUWT Board meeting per month to report on progress of the taskforce.
- Stay in regular contact with the ASUWT Director of Internal Communications & Affairs.
TERM OF TASK FORCE AND TIME COMMITMENT
- Serve a term of January1-June 2022
- An average of 4 hours per week
- Be flexible to allow for occasional evening or weekend commitments for meetings, events or programs
This task force is designed to help create a sense of belonging for transfer students, and strengthen the bridge for our transfer students seeking a bachelors or graduate degree. Recommendations from this taskforce will center on providing strategic insight into the admission, advising and retention systems our transfer students must traverse, while looking to improve the experience for all transfer students who enter our institution.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Represent the UW Student perspective and provide relevant insight and guidance on the admission, advising and retention process for students entering post-community college.
- Serve as a resource for ASUWT as it relates to transfer student concerns.
- Be an active advocate for improving the transfer student experience. Understand the University’s key issues and be able to articulate why support for the transfer student population is critical to the growth and development of this institution.
- Attend a minimum of 7 task force meetings (1-2 hours each).
- Provide the ASUWT President and Directors with recommendations on how to improve the transfer student experience.
- Coordinate with Registrar, Admissions, University Academic Advising, Marketing & Communications and other relevant offices as necessary.
- Provide feedback on the commitments made from University leaders, once they have reviewed the recommendations put forth by the committee.
- Create and provide oversight on the implementation plans.
- Attend 1 ASUWT Board meeting per month to report on progress of the taskforce.
- Stay in regular contact with the ASUWT Director of Finance.
