Work part-time and help pay for your education

Work Study is a great way to help pay for your education while gaining invaluable experience by working part-time. By participating in the Work Study Program you will learn work skills that are transferable to future career paths. The Federal and State Work Study Programs give you the opportunity to work part-time while going to school.

As an employer it is a way to create more opportunities as your salary costs will be subsidized by the Work Study Program. Learn more about being a work study employer.

INFORMATION for Students

How to Apply

Contact the individual employers to apply for a job. You will need a Work Study Award Verification Form from the Work Study Office which verifies your eligibility. Bothell and Tacoma students can pick up a Work Study Award Verification Form from the Financial Aid offices at their campus.

Your employer will complete and return this form to the Work Study Office when you have been hired. The original must be returned to the Work Study Office so that we have a record of you being hired. It is very important that this form is returned to us before you start working. For students who worked full-time in the summer and wish to continue in autumn quarter, a new Award Verification form will be required.

Please keep in mind that Work Study is only one type of job. There are non-Work Study positions on-campus and other part-time employment jobs off-campus. Handshake is the UW’s online job and internship database.

How Work Study Works

In a work study program, the employer pays only 20-50 percent of your wages; the rest is subsidized by federal or state funds. You can, therefore, find jobs and may be able to keep your loan debt down by earning part of your needed funds so that you can borrow less. Jobs may be located on or off-campus with government agencies, non-profit organizations or private corporations. Many offer career-related and/or community service experience.

You may work up to 19 hours per week, and pay rates are the same as for comparable, non-work-study jobs. No job pays less than the prevailing minimum wage.

Work Study, offered through the federal and state Work Study programs, provides bright, talented students with meaningful employment opportunities while helping to pay for part of the student’s wages.

Both on- and off-campus employers can hire work study students. However, the information and process are different, so please reference the appropriate Employer Guide for your organization.
