Lunar New Year celebration was an evening filled with vibrant performances, cultural cuisine, engaging RSO (Registered Student Organization) tabling, and opportunities for mingling. Students and staff learned about the rich traditions and festivities as they came together to usher in the new year with joy and community spirit.
Lunar New Year is a traditional holiday with a history of over 3,000 years, originating in China. It marks the start of a new year based on the lunar calendar. Early celebrations focused on honoring deities and ancestors around the harvest time. Over time, traditions like warding off evil spirits and celebrating the new year itself emerged. The Han Dynasty solidified the date and some well-known practices like loud noises to drive away negativity. Though facing challenges, Lunar New Year has endured and remains a major cultural celebration even in modern times.
